"I Love Being Broke", Said No One Ever

I've been around a long time, in marketing I mean, and I've seen a lot of shit.

Some of it good, a lot of it garbage.

I think a lot of marketers and business owners forget one basic rule.

People need to like you to want to do business with you, yes, but if no one sees you, no one cares.

The "if they build it they will come" framework has never worked.

When you are passionate about what you do and who you serve, it makes work, not seem like work at all, it really does feel fun, not all of it, but most of it.

I love what I do and if you're reading this, you probably love what you do too...but loving what you do and struggling financially makes no sense.

So many entrepreneurs get caught in that loop, "I love what I do, so it doesn't really matter how much I make", well, that's total bullshit. Or at least you should be told that it's bullshit.

Being broke is for suckers.

Where do you think you picked up that toxic limiting belief from?

Ask yourself, why does one equal the other?

When we get fixated on loving what we do and thinking we don't have to make money doing it, something really dangerous happens.

We stop treating our businesses like a business and treat it like a hobby.

There is no hobby on earth that will pay you like your business will or can.

If you're running a business like a hobby, a few things happen.

  1. You aren't consistent. - You won't show up in any area if you act like it's a hobby. You might get to it when you get to, but the sense of urgency simply won't be there.

  2. You won't take growth seriously. If you are treating your business more like a hobby, you simply won't look at ways to expand.

  3. No one will take you seriously. When you look at your business as a hobby, so will your potential customers and clients.

So when you look at your business in this way, you aren't giving it the chance it deserves. You're sort of spitting in the face of your biz when you do that.

So what can you do?

Speak Life Into It

First, I would start to speak life into it. Say things like, "I own a business and this is who I serve and how I serve them". Start by saying it out loud to yourself first. For some of you, this may seem silly, "Well Cara, I have been doing this for years", yes, but maybe you have also not stepped fully into your business for years too.

Create A Plan You Can Action Today

Maybe you've had this business for a long time, but if you don't have a plan you follow and metrics that matter, you still have a hobby. It's that basic. Look at what you want to earn in the next 12 months. Look at how you would need to make that happen. Come up with a strategy to make it happen and then take action.

Stop Lying To Yourself

This might be the biggest one. Stop the bullshit. Stop saying that "you don't have time" or "I don't know where to take this". Sure you do, you're just letting fear navigate the bus, that stops now. If you keep saying you don't know what you want or what to do, the subconscious will deliver just that. Stop bullshitting yourself. If you want a successful business, say so and do that work.

Once you start treating your business like a business, you start to get pumped about sharing it. And sharing it through social media, blogs like this one, live events, and email marketing, all come down to how seriously you take your business and whether or not you treat it like a hobby or, something that can more than feed you and also be fun as hell to work on everyday. If you're not sharing, you're not caring. Funny to use that saying here, but it actually works.

So how can you take your business more seriously today?

  • Is there a post you want to do?

  • An event you want to host?

  • What can you do today to level up how you treat your business?

If you don't know, ask yourself, "What will move the needle from hobby to business".

Can't wait to see what you do!

Big love,

Cara
